Project overview

Ever-changing realms. Relentless combat.

Shattered Realms is a dark-fantasy roguelite ARPG from Spellbound Studios: Guardians rebuilding Aetherhold after a world-shattering catastrophe, one procedurally generated expedition at a time. The moment-to-moment game is a bullet-hell of abilities, hordes and boss fights, so every effect has to hit hard and clear instantly.

SGZ came in as the real-time VFX partner: ability casts, hit feedback, status effects and the big area-of-effect abilities that carry a build. The bar was legibility under load: dozens of enemies, overlapping abilities and loot on the ground, all still parsable at a glance from an isometric camera.

Because every run is randomised, the effects had to read the same across biomes, lighting and enemy density: authored as a modular, reusable library rather than one-off set pieces. What follows is a look at the combat, the build screen, the ability language and the loot moment, straight from the game.

What the VFX carries

Effects that read in a bullet hell.

01

Relentless combat

Ability casts, impacts and AoE tuned so the player's own effects never bury the threat reads: silhouette and telegraph first, spectacle second.

02

Customizable builds

Each Guardian class stacks abilities and modifiers. The VFX language scales with the build: the same effect grows louder as the numbers do.

03

High-impact gear

Loot spans rarity tiers, and the drop-and-equip moment gets its own hit of feedback so power gains are felt, not just read on a stat sheet.

04

Modular & reusable

Built as a library, not set pieces: effects hold up across procedurally generated biomes, lighting and enemy density, run after run.

From the game

Four moments, four VFX jobs.

Captured straight from Shattered Realms: pick a moment to see what the effects work is doing under the hood.

01Relentless combat

Combat that stays readable

The core loop: overlapping abilities, fire rings, embers and enemy telegraphs sharing one screen. The VFX job here is contrast and hierarchy: the player's own AoE glows warm and transient, threat telegraphs stay saturated and persistent, so the eye always finds the danger before the spectacle.

“In a bullet-hell roguelite, the effects aren't decoration: they're how the player reads the fight. Every glow has to earn its place before it earns its spectacle.”
